Bright lavender – Oil painting on canvas

This is another 5″x5″ oil on canvas image. I decided to continue with the theme of working the lavender flowers, but wanted something a little brighter than my earlier work. I’m still experimenting with complementary colour relationships, and the artificial brightness invoked by the use of these colours, so, this piece is using the classic pairing of yellow and purple.

Green succulent on abstracted magenta background – Oil painting on canvas

Green succulent on abstracted magenta background – Oil painting on canvas

This piece is an 8″x8″ oil on canvas painting continuing to explore the themes of complementary colours. On the newer colour wheel the complement of magenta is green. I wanted to make something with a magenta background and green foreground. Succulents are so charming, so I thought it would be nice to make a piece with a succulent as the focal element. I’m happy with how this one turned out, very fun, bold and decorative. The thicker textures present throughout this series...

This is another one of my little 5″x5″ oil on canvas pieces. I’m still playing with complementary colours and the classic pairing of red and green. For the green in this painting I decided to work with decorative kale. They can be so attractive, you can have ones that look like roses! This one continues to have a post impressionist influence on the more modern abstracted tiled background. The bright colours and textures in this piece are a fun treat to...

Purple and Yellow – Oil On Canvas

This thick textured work makes up another piece in my first oil painting series exploring complementary colour relationships using florals and botanicals on tiled abstracted backgrounds. This one is a tiny little 5″x5′ canvas. On the old colour wheel the complement of purple is yellow, so that is what I am playing around with here. I wanted to use some rich tones in this piece, really firing up those bright colours. I’m quite a fan of impressionism...

This is another piece from my first oil painting series. Its a little 5″x5″ oil on canvas painting. In this work I am continuing to explore complementary colour relationships. So, in the modern colour wheel the complement of green is magenta. This is a softer tone than many of the other pieces in this exploratory series. On the traditional colour wheel the complement of green is red. Magenta can seem like a softer version of red (it isn’t really, but it...

Blue Orange Yellow Floral – Oil painting on canvas

Blue Orange Yellow Floral – Oil painting on canvas

This piece was my very first oil painting. I’ve been exploring complementary colour relationships and this piece is an expression of those studies. In the older colour wheel the complement of blue was orange, and in the modern colour wheel it is yellow, so this piece explores both the old and the new colour wheels. A visual effect is created when you put complementary colours next to each other wherein they artificially brighten each other.  It creates an effect that...
