Brisbane Postcard Project – 11-15

Hi there! I’ve been steadily working on my Brisbane series. Some time in the last couple of weeks I ended up making a tonne of new postcards. I poured out a little too much paint and ended up making a bunch of post-card bases. Including the postcards that I have already distributed I have close to 50 now! Isn’t that cool! So, here I’m going to highlight the next 5 pieces in the series, from number 11 to number 15.

This is number 11 in the series. It was made with fineliners. I bought a set of fluro fineliners. There is something fun about them. This has a nice graphic style to it. I enjoy the way that the lines in the landscape highlight the city.

Number 12 in the series also uses the fluro highlighters and is an extrapolation of what was happening in postcards 10 and 11. Number ten uses a hatched illustrative style, covering just the cityscape element. The 11th postcard has a repeating pattern in the hatching and is applied to the landscape around the city, this print takes that style of pattern with the lines, using some nice bold colours and applies this concept to the cityscape. I’ve gone back into the basic print with black markers to add some emphasis to the lines in the city.

Number 13 in the series continues to expand on this illustrative style, and adds the classic square and rectangle shapes which are becoming a staple in my work. The colours in my fluro fineliners are limited. I used orange in the river, because orange is close to brown for me, and also used green – to give it as much as I could of that classic Brisbane River look, within this highly stylized piece.

Number 14 continues this natural exploration, but goes a little bit funky on the way. This is the first print where I have played with using lines to create a focal point in a really directed way, and is also the first time I have gone over the lines to give the city a bit of a ‘wonky’ effect. There is something special about the way this piece came out, and it is probably my favourite, of the pieces I’ve made using the fluro fineliners.

Number 15 takes a hard detour away from the fineliner work. This image uses the squares that I use as a repeated motif in my work. It is created with acrylic paint for the coloured element and black marker to bring the city back into focus.
