The artistic process – Part Two – One painting from start to finish.

I begun my last blog post with the goal of attempting to show all of the work that goes into producing a single painting, however the background information about the decisions that go into making a body of work became a post all of its own. That post helps show elements that inform the creation of a single piece in a series – and today its time to dig into that single painting – the yellow and purple lavender image displayed at the top of this post. So this series has been an exploration of complementary colour relationships...

The artistic process – Part One – On creating a body of work.

I’m going to attempt to show some of the process of creation. Its pretty difficult inherently to show everything about how a single piece is made, all the things in the background that exist before the current image can be created – but I thought it would be nice to give an attempt at illustrating what I can. This started off as one post about my lavender imagery but even getting into explaining the background of it was turning into a hefty chunk of information so I decided to step back in this post and just illustrate the...

Selfies, not just for narcissists.

So. I’ve got an interest in selfies, as an expression by and for women, as a fun activity, and as a viable and positive subject for artworks. So when someone I know is doing research on selfies and that research gets media coverage, thats certainly something interesting to me! Researcher Stephen Dann is a cool dude, and I assume Dr Toni Eagar must be also. So. Here is a link to the article. Its titled: “Instagram selfies not just for narcissists, researchers say” As an instagram user who posts selfies, well, if it...

Selfies are cool: On the 2016 Clayton Ultz winner – Kailum Graves.

Much like I did with the Contemporary Arts Award I will probably write a longer post with some impressions of all of the finalists who have work that makes me think about my own practice as an arts worker, but, I am very tired and the winner had a piece which includes the subject of selfies in a non-critical light (I wouldn’t call it exactly a positive light either as far as I can tell, its treated as a neutral medium and neutral subject for exploration, which honestly pleases me.) The piece is called ‘Transillumination’ It...

RAW Art Showcase – Experiences and Reflections

Hello – last night I attended a RAW Arts showcase as a guest. Before going to the showcase I did a bunch of reading online about peoples experiences, and I thought it might be good to contribute to the research of other artists by writing one of my own. You know, give back to the artists community in that way? So this post is geared at fellow artists, particularly artists who are thinking about accepting an invitation to a RAW event. I’m super wrecked though, I’m just, massively tired. Doing events takes a lot out of me, and...

Reflections on the Contemporary Arts Awards finalists

The finalists for the 2016 Contemporary Arts Awards have been announced and I thought it might be fitting to have a look through some of these finalists. I’m not going to talk about all of the finalists, and in fact don’t even plan on talking about the winning entry at all. I’m just going to take a little look at the works here that resonate with me, or make me think or feel anything that has to do with my own arts practice and direction as an artist. I’m not going to put a lot of time into these reflections,...

Hello everyone!

Hello everyone!

Hi there everyone, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Annalee Beer. I live and work in Brisbane, Australia. I’m starting down the path of becoming a professional artist, which is something of an exciting change in my life. I’ve committed myself to doing this as my full time gig, how cool and how scary! Starting new ventures is always scary, I think. 🙂 I’m still learning who I am as an artist. For the past three months I’ve been teaching myself to use oil paints, but my artisan craft work, particularly my beaded...
