Art-Life update and #TheFutureWeWant exhibition

Thursday is blog post day. 😀

So what do I have to say? Whats been going on with me? Well. This week my work is in its first gallery show. Thats very exciting for me. The show (named #thefuturewewant) is being put on by a mob called EPIC Assist, an employment service for folk with disabilities who seem pretty cool. Its being held by Aspire Gallery. Its for professional and emerging artists with a disability being held to coincide with the International Day of Disability.

Details of the event are here: http://epicassist.org/au/epichub/thefuturewewant/?gclid=CLbdpPTb0dACFVRwvAodu4ALzw

The featured post is one of the works I submitted for the show, one of my favorites. A gorgeous Australian native. Speaking of Australian natives on my way home from dropping my pieces off at the gallery I took a number of reference photos of flowers for future work and they included these lovely ones. These would make a lovely base for a painting don’t you think?

I have read so much about how as an artist building a career it is essential to get out and talk to the art community – and this gallery absolutely is one I would want to develop a relationship with but after going to the RAW event I was wiped out and it set back my recovery by months. So I regretfully decided not to attend the opening. There’s a celebration night being held tomorrow (which is my 30th birthday!) for the event but as much as networking is vital I think it would be a better move for my health to sit it out. 🙁

I’m so grateful for the opportunity though! My art career is new, and getting my work into a gallery show is very exciting!

I’ve been checking out the gallery on instagram for quite a while and when I dropped my work off I got to take a look at the (at the time) current Michael Cawdrey exhibition and see some of those works in person. He has some gorgeous works and themes that are definately things I want to hit on when I am doing my own cityscapes of Brisbane. I’d already considered how I would use busses in my paintings are they are so iconically Brisbane and how I would use power lines because they’re such lovely composition points. Well look at these works:
June Rain
Morris St Paddington

Perfect! They’re wonderful and large in person as well. It was good to see them in person. My agoraphobia means I have a hard time getting out, so I end up just looking at a lot of work on the internet and not walking into the galleries.

When I’m more recovered I’d love to go in and see more art in Brisbane galleries in person. Looking forward to it.
